How to Handle Divorce Stress and Divorce Anxiety

Experienced representation for spouses who suffer divorce stress and anxiety

Stay calm. There are ways of dealing with divorce anxiety. There are bound to be many types of divorce stresses between the time you realize your marriage is over and the time your divorce issues are fully settled. Our skilled New Jersey family lawyers guide spouses through each stage of the divorce process. With thorough preparation and understanding, you’ll be able to move forward knowing that you have secured your financial future and the future of your children – and that you’ve protected yourself and your children from the trauma of ending one phase of your life and starting another.

Divorce anxiety is common. It’s upsetting admitting that one phase of your life is over.  It’s natural to worry why the marriage didn’t work out. If you have children, you want them to feel loved and not to feel that they were responsible. Every spouse worries about how they’ll pay the bills because living apart is more expensive than living together. The good news is that there are many practical and legal solutions.

The practical solutions to Divorce Anxiety

There are many self-help suggestions to help spouses cope with anxiety during divorce and anxiety after divorce.

The Science Times recommends these tips for managing divorce anxiety:

  •         Spend quality time with family and friends. It’s important to be connected with people you care about and who care about you. People you love can take your mind off the divorce. Family and good friends can also help you understand you’re not alone. Some of the people you cherish may have even gone through a divorce themselves.
  •         Admit you’re going through a rough time. Be aware that divorce is a life-changing event. Understand that you will have good and bad moments during the divorce and even after the divorce is finalized.
  •         Stay fit. It helps to engage in physical activities. There’s a classic saying – A sound mind in a sound body. Take a walk. Run. Try yoga. Meditate. There are a lot of healthy ways to stay active and reduce divorce anxiety. There’s even scientific evidence that exercise “reduces the stress hormones, adrenaline, and cortisol, according to Harvard Health.” Fitness also includes emotional fitness. So, allow yourself time to read a good book, watch a great movie, or listen to music.

For some people, speaking with a psychologist or mental health counselor may be advisable. Divorce is hard. There’s no shame in seeking professional help. Experienced professionals can help you explore and work out your anxiety and stress. Minimizing divorce stress and minimizing post-divorce anxiety is a legitimate and worthwhile goal for every spouse.

Spouses with children should do everything they can to keep their children engaged and to impress on them that the difficulties their parents are having are no reflection on the children.

Most of all, understand that there are things you can control and things you can’t. As for the things you can’t control, that’s why we’re here. To help protect your interests.

Many divorce disputes are resolved without a court trial

Our experienced divorce lawyers protect your key interests by negotiating strong settlements. Many divorce disputes are resolved through mediation or collaboration. It’s rare these days that there’s a full-throttle divorce litigation before a judge. Our lawyers work to:

Protect your right to an equitable distribution of your marital property – based on the financial needs of each spouse. In many cases, a custodial parent and children continue to live in the same home. We’ll explain your rights to your spouse’s business, retirement benefits, and other assets – while working to protect your rights to these items.

Obtain just alimony awards based on the length of the marriage and the ability of the spouses to earn a living.

Negotiate child custody agreements and parenting plans that put the best interests of your children first.

Ensure that children receive the financial support they deserve.

We also work to obtain temporary orders during the divorce which should reduce your anxiety during the divorce. New Jersey family courts, in appropriate cases, will enter:

Temporary child custody and child support orders

Temporary alimony orders (called alimony pendente lite) to ensure that a spouse with a strong financial situation can’t pressure a spouse who is struggling to make ends meet – into a bad settlement just to have some quick funds.
