Should You Get A Post-Divorce Tattoo

Growing numbers of people are getting a tattoo as a response to divorce. According to the Pew Research Center, 40% of people between 18 and 29 have at least one tattoo, many of them obtained after divorce. Women who divorce have the highest rate of tattooing after the divorce. There is a plethora of Pinterest boards showing post-divorce tattoos, many emphasizing freedom, forgiving oneself for mistakes, and confidence in the future. Is a tattoo a good way to move forward after your divorce?

A tattoo allows you to make a permanent alteration to your appearance, one that you might feel mirror changes to your emotional state or personality. Getting a tattoo is a visual reminder of what you’ve survived, the courage you have developed, and the obstacles you have overcome. It can be a tangible way to remember that you are strong and have grown and can serve as a badge of honor.

Many people regret tattoos later in life and having them removed can be expensive, time-consuming, and painful. Even if you think you won’t regret your tattoo, you might find a new partner in the coming years who doesn’t want to be reminded of your divorce or your ex.

Experts recommend that if you are considering a tattoo you should try it out on a temporary basis. A henna tattoo lasts for several weeks. Using a permanent marker yourself can give you an idea of what a tattoo will look like. Another option is to put an image of the tattoo up on your fridge, corner of your computer screen and on your dresser mirror so you get a sense of what it feels like to look at it all the time. It can also be a good idea to talk to a therapist about your feelings before you make a permanent decision.
