Divorce and Your Health

Getting a divorce is one of the most stressful life events you can go through, as stressful as the death of a spouse or child. There are studies that show that divorce can have a negative impact on your health. People who divorce are more likely to experience long-term health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, depression, cancer, mobility problems and chronic health conditions.

Because divorce is a known health risk, it is essential that you take care of yourself during and after your divorce. Follow these tips to stay healthy and reduce the impact of divorce on your health.

  • Maintain a healthy weight. Stress is often a reason we overeat, so keep your focus on eating right. If you are suddenly living alone, it can be challenging to cook or buy healthy foods. Focus on produce, lean protein, and whole grains.
  • Find activities that help reduce your stress. Yoga, boxing, aerobics, tai chi, hiking, and other exercise classes and activities give you a way to release your frustration and keep it from getting bottled up inside.
  • Exercise regularly. Regular physical activity will lower your stress level and have a positive impact on reducing your risk for health problems like heart disease and diabetes.
  • Get enough sleep. If you are unable to sleep due to stress, talk to your physician or therapist.
  • Do preventative care. Do not put off well visits, health screenings, and prescription refills because you think you are too busy or too stressed. This is the time in your life when it is most important to keep up with these kinds of appointments.
  • Consider making some health changes. You are at a point in your life where many things are changing. Maybe this can be the catalyst for you to make some other changes, such as weight loss or smoking cessation. It is never too late to reinvent yourself.
