Emily R. Carstensen is an experienced attorney who handles a variety of family law matters such as: custody, parenting time, grandparent visitation and child support applications, complex equitable distribution cases, domestic violence (Temporary and Final Restraining Orders) appeals and trials, post-divorce applications, prenuptial agreements and palimony cases. Emily also serves as court appointed Guardian Ad Litem to represent the best interests of children and serves families as a Parent Coordinator. Emily has extensive courtroom experience throughout northern and central New Jersey. She regularly appears in Bergen, Morris, Essex, Somerset, Hunterdon, Hudson, Sussex and Middlesex Counties.
Emily is a member of the New Jersey Bar Association and the Bergen County Bar Association. Emily serves as a panelist on the Matrimonial Early Settlement Panel in Bergen and Morris counties. Additionally, Emily provides pro bono legal representation for victims of domestic violence through the Battered Women’s Legal Advocacy Program. She previously volunteered for the Morris County Litigant Self Help Program. Emily was recognized as a New Jersey Super Lawyer’s “Rising Star” in 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017. Additionally, Emily was recognized by the American Institute of Family Law Attorneys in 2016 and 2017 for client satisfaction.
Emily attended Monmouth University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English while participating in the Honors Program. She received her law degree from Seton Hall University School of Law. While attending law school, she was selected to participate in the Center for Social Justice Family Law Clinic. Thereafter, she served a judicial clerkship in Hunterdon County Superior Court, Chancery Division, Family Part with the Honorable Stephen B. Rubin.
